The finale of Shostakovich's 11th Symphony "Tocsin" (the alarm bell) depicts the spread of the revolutionary mood throughout the Russian empire after the massacre on the Palace Square, foreshadowing the successful 1917 revolution. It is impossible to do justice to the score and "perform" this movement on just one synth. There are just too many instruments. I started with a Proteus 2 and then used a Roland JV1080 (with Orchestral Expansion card). I used a Korg 03R/W ("SSU Bells") for its tubular bell (for layering purposes, in order to stand out over the full orchestra). One will notice immediately that the bowed (arco) strings share MIDI channels with the same section playing pizzicato. Note that when I change programs between tracks/instruments sharing a MIDI channel, I put a program change just before the NEW instrument starts to play. This should simplify re-numbering somewhat for those who are not using a Proteus 2. In this sequence I have the English horn (playing a beautiful solo, I might add) sharing a channel with the contrabassoon, xylophone, and tremolo strings. Still, there are 34 tracks with minimal layering. Non-standard (remapped) Proteus 2 instrument locations: English Horn=64, Bass Clarinet=69. No changes from the E-mu samples have been made; I have simply extended their range (the former up, the latter down), since E-mu didn't sample them throughout their entire playing range. Note on tremolo strings for non-Proteus 2 owners: 19=tremolo, 20=tremolo with a crescendo. Note also that program 40 is a solo trumpet. Percussion: I have used a Roland JV1080 program for Bass Drum rolls. For the snare drum the "A" is used for snare rolls. Single hits are "C"'s. Transpositions: since most of those who download this file will not be using it on a Proteus 2, I have transposed down an octave the contrabassoon, pizzicato, and bowed basses tracks and the piccolo track up an octave, since the Proteus does this automatically. I have also transposed up an octave the xylophone, since it sounds an octave higher than written (the Proteus 2 does not do this).
